Demosthenes Ioannou

Senior Lead Economist, DG International and European Relations at European Central Bank

Demos Ioannou has worked at the ECB since 2000, in the Directorate General International and European Relations, DG Economics, DG Monetary Policy, and as Head of the ECB Representative Office in Brussels. He has represented the ECB as Member in the Economic Policy Committee (EPC) of the EU, and as observer participant in the ECOFIN Council and the EU Macroeconomic Dialogue. His tasks have covered EMU governance, the ECB’s interaction with other EU institutions, the ECB’s macroeconomic projections, EMU deepening, economic integration, convergence and structural policies in the EU, the ERM II, the ECB's monetary policy strategy review and monetary policy communication, the ECB Survey of Monetary Analysts, the impact of geopolitics and strategic autonomy policies from a central bank perspective, the transmission of shocks to and from the euro area. He has led teams at the ECB dealing with the European Parliament's monetary dialogue, EMU governance, and the inter-institutional relations of the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) and banking union more generally. He worked in the economic office of Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos. He is currently a Senior Lead Economist in the DG International and European Relations of the ECB. He has studied economics, politics and philosophy and holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge.
