Irish Economic Association Annual Conference

A number of teams working on FDI-related issues met up at the Irish Economic Association annual conference in April 2000. Stephen Pavelin (UCD) presented a paper on ‘The Geographical Diversification of the Leading Firms in the EU’; Kristof Dascher (UCD) presented ‘Trade, FDI and Congestion: the Small and Very Open Economy’; and Holger Gorg (University of Ulster) and Eric Strobl (UCD) presented ‘Multinational Companies and the Development of Firm Start-Up Size: Evidence from Quantile Regressions from Ireland’.

Symposium on New Issues in Trade and Location

Many members also met at the Symposium on New Issues in Trade and Location in August 1998 at Lund. This symposium was organised by Anthony Venables and Rikard Forslid and it addressed several issues, including new areas such as trade location and growth, empirical evidence and policy implications. Among the Network participants who presented papers were, Roger Bivand, (‘A Review of Spatial Statistical Techniques for Location Studies’), Frederico Trionfetti (‘The Dynamics of Country-Specific Determinants of Foreign Direct Investment’), Hans Kind (‘Uncertainty, Flexible Exchange Rates and Agglomeration’) and Rikard Forslid (MNCs, Growth and Location Externalities’). Other network members also presented papers and acted as discussants.

European Research Workshop in International Trade...

Many members of the Network also met at the European Research Workshop in International Trade in June 1998, of which Tony Venables (LSE) was one of the organizers. Time was set aside for seminars in which participants present their work, but a substantial amount was also reserved for independent work and collaborative research with other participants. Papers were presented by Network participants such as Rikard Forslid (‘Economic Geography and Comparative Advantage’); Karen Helene Midelfart-Knarvik and Frode Steen (‘Self-Reinforcing Agglomerations? An Empirical Industry Study’); Marion Jansen (‘Job Creation, Job Destruction, and the International Division of Labour’); Tony Venables (‘Agglomeration and Economic Development: Import Substitution vs. Trade Liberalisation’); and Jan Haaland (‘International Competition for Multinational Investment’.

None of these meetings were funded by the TMR Network, but they are examples of the synergies that are possible with other ongoing CEPR research programmes.
