Obituary: Antoni Calvó-Armengol

Richard Portes writes:

Antoni Calvó-Armengol died suddenly on Saturday, 3 November 2007 at the age of 37. He was a CEPR Research Affiliate and a superb scholar, a brilliant speaker and teacher, an extraordinarily vibrant personality, and a nice and good man. All those who knew him will miss him greatly. Our thoughts are with his wife and two young children.

His colleagues at UAB write:

Toni Calvó-Armengol unexpectedly passed away on Saturday November 3rd.

A brilliant and committed scientist, a passionate and enthusiastic man, at 37 years of age he had become one of the world's most outstanding economists. He was indeed a leader to us.

He started his career in Paris, at the Ecole Polytechnique and at the Ecole de Ponts. Although the business world attracted him for a short while, fortunately for the academic community he decided to undertake a PhD in Economics at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and Paris. He was Assistant Professor at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, and for the last four years he was ICREA Professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. His work on social and economic networks, as well as mechanism design, was at the forefront of research worldwide. Toni always strived to excel as a teacher and research supervisor.

We will keep you informed about the activities that we will be organizing in his memory. At this moment, our thoughts and love go to his wife and two children, as well as to his family in Andorra.

Toni's funeral took place on Tuesday, 6 November, at 12 noon in the church of Escaldes (Andorra).

Those of you who would like to send a message to Toni's family, you can do so at tonismessage@hotmail.com

We will pass on all the messages that we receive.
