On the back of an overall process of globalization of the world economy, globalisation of science and its impact is very often talked about and with great animosity. With the emerging economic powerhouses building up their own scientific capabilities, will the West be able to leverage innovation capacity into sustainable international competitiveness? Especially in the US, with its science workforce pervaded by foreigners, the rise of the Asian countries provokes deep concerns. The debate also extends into the EU, evaluating its capacity to become the most knowledge-based economy in the world. Most of the time, these debates are taking place without good empirical underpinning. This presentation provides a short view of the recent evidence available on trends and impact. This meeting has been developed to facilitate the flow of research and policy considerations between the members of the Collaborative Project, SCience, Innovation, FIrms and markets in a GLObalized World (SCI-FI GLOW) and European Commission policymakers. In order to look simultaneously at the effects of globalization on the knowledge sector and on firms and markets in general, this project brings together two ‘communities’ of economic researchers: those interested primarily in the research sector and those who look at the effect of globalization in terms of trade flows, the organization of firms and product and labour market outcomes.
