Presentations by leading academics will examine the seven themes of the HIPOD project:

  • Establishing the basic parameters of the European development transition from c.1300
  • Quantifying the relative long-run development of Europe versus Asia
  • Quantifying African and Latin American economic performance in the long-run
  • Understanding Europe’s transition to modern economic growth
  • Gender, demography and development
  • Core-periphery relationships: implications for the core
  • Core periphery relationships: implications for the periphery, and how it should catch up

This meeting has been organised by the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in collaboration with the academics involved in the HIPOD project (‘Historical Patterns of Development and Underdevelopment: Origins and Persistence of the Great Divergence) which is funded by the European Commission's FP7 Programme.
