EuroCOIN Indicator Signals Fifth Month of Economic Growth

The latest value of the EuroCOIN indicator released by CEPR shows:

  • For the fifth month in a row, the Euro Area economy showed positive growth in April. Growth has continued to rise after a brief pause in March. EuroCOIN rose to 0.509 in April from revised 0.404 in March and 0.427 in February. The new figure confirms the positive trend started in December 2001.

  • EuroCOIN now shows that economic activity in the Euro Area is growing at a rate only slightly lower than the average rate over the last fifteen years. The contribution of surveys and financial variables to the indicator is positive. The contribution of industrial production and employment variables is still negative, but has improved slightly since March.

  • Between December 2000 and November 2001 EuroCOIN fell and in September 2001 became negative for the first time since the end of 1995. In December 2001 the indicator showed an upturn. This positive signal was confirmed by the positive figures for January, February, March and April 2002. In March economic growth fell slightly, but the positive trend was restored in April.

  • Newly available data have led to a small upward revision of EuroCOIN for January and February, and a small downward revision for March.
