21/5/2010 Cornucopia Quantified: New Goods and Improvements in Living Standards , Barcelona
Hosted By: CREI and Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona
Organizers: Robert J Gordon and Hans-Joachim Voth
The conference will explore the impact that new goods have had on the standard of living. Almost all the goods we see around ourselves have only been available for a century or two at most. New goods such as painkillers, penicillin, computers and mobile phones contribute substantially to our well-being. Yet traditional measures of living standards have struggled to capture the benefits of new goods. Typically, we simply divide nominal income by the price of an unchanging basket of goods to determine how 'real incomes' have changed. A number of new approaches have been proposed in recent years, and the value of goods and services from Apple-Cinnamon Cheerios to mobile phones, PCs, and the internet has been reassessed.

27/5/2010 Media Skills for Researchers - Complimentary Skills Training for AMID and GIST Early Stage and Experienced Researchers , CEPR, London
Hosted By: CEPR
Organizers: Stephen N Broadberry and Bruce M.S. Campbell
Communicating research findings to potential users outside the academic community - whether in government, the private sector or civil society - should be an essential element in most social scientists’ working lives. One of the most effective ways of reaching these target audiences, influencing policy and practice and changing public opinion is to make use of the media.

Over the past decade Romesh Vaitilingam has, through his work with the Royal Economic Society (RES) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), revolutionised the way UK social scientists communicate with the public. He has also pioneered new approaches to media and communications training for social scientists in the UK. All of Romesh’s co-trainers are or have been working journalists, such as the editor of Science and Public Affairs Wendy Barnaby; Evan Davis, the BBC's economics editor; Martin Huckerby, former foreign editor of The Observer; Gareth Jones, business editor at BBC Wales; and former Financial Times journalist Alan Pike.

The course is open to researchers in the networks AMID and GIST.

This complementary skills training is funded under the grants: Actors, Markets, and Institutions in Developing Countries: A micro-empirical approach, AMID, Contract number: PITN-GA-2008-2114705, and Globalization, Investment, and Services Trade, GIST, Contract number: PITN-GA-2008-211429 Marie Curie Initial Training Networks (ITN) funded under the EU's Seventh Framework Programme
